Getting Started

"I don't know what I want to do!"

"I don't look good in hats!"

We hear this all the time, and we get it! Buying a hat is not something you do every day, and it might be just a little intimidating. EVERYONE looks good in a hat, you just haven't found the right one yet, and we're here to help you! From choosing material, to deciding styles and shapes, brim length and decorating, we'll keep working with you towards making your hat uniquely YOU!

So PITTER PATTER, let's get at 'er!
Choosing a hat material — felt and straw hats side by side
Step 01

Choose your Material

Hats can be made with all kinds of materials. The most common types, and the ones we carry, are Fur Felt, Wool Felt, Straw, and Palm. Each material has its pros and cons, so you really can't go wrong.

Choose a material that will suit your need. If you're looking for that high-end, heirloom hat, go with fur felt. Looking for something to wear while mowing the lawn in the summer? Straw or palm may be your jimmy-jam. Like the fur felt look, but want something more economical? Wool felt is the way to go. This is also where you pick the color of hat you want.

Remember, this isn't going to be your LAST HAT! This is just a starting place to start your collection.

Step 02

Sizin' and Head Shapin'

Alright, we've picked the starting block that will be your hat. Now we need to make it YOUR hat, which means it needs to be fit and shaped to YOUR head!

If you're interested in this type of hat, chances are you've picked one up and tried it on before. Maybe you loved the look, but dang it, it just wasn't comfortable!! That's where we come in with some hot steam and start adjusting the hat to your head shape.

We'll start with finding the diameter of your head. If you've worn fitted hats and have a starting place, great! Let us know! If not, no worries, we'll walk you through it.

Step 03

Let's Shape It!

Well, it fits and feels good now, but it isn't right yet. LET'S FIX THAT! This is where we start to adjust physical features of the hat to make it just right. Let's find the crown shape, the brim length and style, and any kind of fancy customization you want.

Ever see a movie or show and you were like, "DANG! That hat is FIRE!" This is the step you let me know that! Gives us an idea of where to start.

Step 04

Let's Church It Up!!

MAN!! We're looking good now!! But we're not done yet. Last step is to add your 32 pieces of flare! Let's change out that hatband, distress the edges, brand your initials or a puppy paw in it. Feather or playing card? YES PLEASE!! Make this your hat!

Felt, Wool, Straw & Palm — Know Your Hat

Not sure what your hat should be made of? Here's the breakdown, straight from us.

Two fur felt cowboy hats side by side

Fur Felt

Fur felt hats are typically made from a blend of animal fur, with beaver being the highest quality. Our felt hats are varying blends of beaver and hare fur that is rolled together to make a tightly bonded material, then formed into an "open crown" that can then be shaped by us into the hat you want. They are generally more weather resistant than wool, but they aren't umbrellas! We also have some pre-shaped hats that are formed by machines — we can take those and fit them to your head and make minor adjustments to suit your style! Fur felt hats are softer to the touch.

Wool felt cowboy hat

Wool Felt

Wool hats are exactly like fur felt hats, just using a blend of wool instead of fur. The hats are warm, firm and shapable just like the fur felt, but at a more economical price point. "So what's the drawback?" Great question! Fur hats tend to be more weather resistant than wool, meaning they hold their shape better in weather, and they shrink less than felt when drying. Wool felt hats will behave like, well, WOOL! They don't like getting wet and will shrink if they do. These are also not as soft to the touch, but they look good! These are great for those who just need a hat for rodeos, concerts, and nights out on the town!

Straw and palm cowboy hats

Straw & Palm Hats

Straw and palm hats are your summer answer! Just because the weather starts getting a bit too warm for fur and wool doesn't mean you can't be styling! Whether you're BBQ'n, floating on the water, mowing the lawn, or sitting around the camp fire, straw and palm hats are a little lighter, a lot cooler, and 100% awesome! We'll be honest, they are a little more difficult to customize and a little less forgiving in hiding creases, but that ain't gonna stop us from getting you into the style you want! Plus, creases are like hat scars, and chicks dig scars...right?
